AC Repair 77070: What Do You Do When the AC Stops Working

The end of summer is upon us, but there is still enough warm weather to make the loss of air conditioning problematic. But not every air conditioner problem requires a call to an AC Repair 77070 technician . . . if you have a few diagnostic tools.

What Causes the System to Stop Working?

If there is no power to the air conditioning system, there are a couple of ideas that might present a solution.

  • Check the electric service panel for the breaker marked “AC.” If the breaker is tripped, it will appear to be neither OFF nor ON. Switch the breaker OFF and then to the ON position.

If this is the correct solution, the AC system should begin operating. It is not unusual for this process to take a few minutes.

If the system returns to operation, the immediate problem may have been solved. However, if the breaker trips again, this will require a call to an AC Repair 77070 technician.

  • Check the thermostat setting as well, make sure that it is set to COOL and to the desired temperature setting. Though it may be unusual for someone to “bump” the settings on the thermostat, stranger things have happened. It is worth a check; restore the thermostat to the proper setting and see what happens.

What Happens When the System Runs But Does Not Cool?

If the blower motor is moving air, but the air is warmer than expected, there are a few checks a homeowner can make to isolate the problem.

  • Check the air filter first. This is not dissimilar to turning a computer OFF and then ON to solve a computer problem.

The air filter collects airborne particles to clean the air. The filter is located immediately before the evaporator chamber, where the air is cooled. Should this filter become clogged, airflow will be restricted to the evaporator chamber and reduce the flow of cool air. Change the filter and determine whether the AC returns to normal function.

  • Check the thermostat to determine whether the batteries have failed. Determine whether the screen is functioning and whether the thermostat is accepting setting changes. Replace the batteries and determine whether it solves the problem.

The loss of cooling can also be attributed to several, more complex problems that will require the expertise of HVAC professionals.

  • The loss of refrigerant in the air conditioning system can account for the lack of cooling. This refrigerant is kept in a closed system under pressure. If a leak develops, it will not take long for the entire supply to be lost to the atmosphere.
  • Electrical problems are also common in aging systems. HVAC systems use both sensors and switches, capacitors, and controllers. Identifying the source of an electrical problem requires specialized tools and training

What Causes Inadequate Cool Air?

If the air conditioner runs and cools properly but does not produce sufficient cool air to achieve the desired temperature setting, there are a few things to check before making a call to a technician.

  • In this instance, check the air filter; reduced airflow can produce this result.
  • Check both the supply vents and the cold air returns. If sufficient vents are covered by drapes or furniture, it will reduce the supply of cool air.

Of course, several mechanical and electrical AC Repair 77070 problems can produce the same results, requiring a call to an AC Repair 77070 technician.
